Nigeria Misses Out on Automatic Qualification for 2027 Women’s World Cup

The Super Falcons are out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a 1–0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.

Cameroon’s Maéva Nyadjou scored the decisive goal from a free kick, sending the Indomitable Lionesses into the semi-finals. It ends Nigeria’s reign as African champions, breaks their extraordinary semi-final streak and means they will not qualify automatically for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup through a WAFCON semi-final place. They will now have to pursue qualification through the playoff route.

Also, for the first time in WAFCON history, the Super Falcons have failed to reach the semi-finals. That is a remarkable statistic when you consider Nigeria’s dominance of the competition. The Super Falcons have won the tournament 10 times, more than any other African nation, including five consecutive titles between 1998 and 2006. They also won the previous edition, coming from two goals down to defeat Morocco 3–2 in the final.

Their consistency over the years has made reaching the latter stages almost an expectation rather than an achievement.
