King Nebuchadnezzar? Ghana’s President Face Backlash For Unveiling Golden Statue of Himself
by Chinazor Ikedimma on Nov 12, 2024
Ghana's outgoing President, Nana Akufo-Addo, recently unveiled a golden statue of himself outside a regional hospital in Sekondi during a "thank-you tour" in the Western Region. The statue was intended to commemorate his development projects during his two terms in office. However, the unveiling sparked significant backlash on social media, with many Ghanaians criticizing it as an act of self-promotion and narcissism. Critics argued that the statue was unnecessary, especially given the country's economic challenges and unfinished projects. Some even demanded that the statue be removed after the president leaves office. While some supporters defended the statue as a recognition of the president's achievements, the majority of public opinion seems to be oppose it. The incident has raised questions about leadership and accountability, with many Ghanaians expressing disappointment and frustration.
Nana Akufo-Addo has been the president of Ghana since 2017. He previously served as Attorney General from 2001 to 2003 and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2007 during the government of then-President John Kufuor. His tenure has been hampered by the greatest financial crisis in a generation, with inflation reaching up to 40% in both 2022 and 2023. His government has blamed this on the Russo-Ukrainian War and the COVID-19 pandemic, but many experts point to mismanagement of state expenditures. The statue's unveiling comes just a few months before Akufo-Addo's two-term presidency ends.
