Cameroon President Returns After Weeks of Unexplained Absence

91-year-old Cameroonian President Paul Biya's health rumors seem to have been disproved. The Head of State spent seven weeks in Geneva before returning home on October 21. On September 4, he departed for the Africa-China meeting from the central African nation. His disappearance from public view for over a month following his departure from China on September 8 sparked rumours of his death in publications and social media posts. It was reported that the government made it illegal to publish information about the president’s health.
According to Cameroonian state radio, Biya, his wife Chantal Biya, and a few of his top aides returned to Yaounde together. State television broadcast live coverage of Biya's return, with thousands of people waiting at important junctions near Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport, where he arrived. Students and civil servants assembled to greet the president. In Cameroon's capital, there was an overwhelming military presence. The military reported that while members of the presidential guard personally protected Biya, as is normal, government troops were deployed in to maintain order. Hundreds of Biya's photographs were put at numerous junctions, along with greetings to welcome him home.
Paul Biya has ruled Cameroon for 42 years making him the second-longest-ruling president in Africa, and the current non-royal national leader with the longest tenure in office.
